Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We are approaching the summer solstice; light floods our days. Today\u2019s text is therefore very much in line with our daily lives: \u201cI am the light of the world,\u201d yet it stands in a disturbing contrast to the darkness we see in our current world. This claim by Christ, when placed in the context of the Middle East, takes on even greater significance, as Christ rises above the power of the sun over life on earth and the planet.<\/p>\n<p>I also choose today\u2019s text because I recalled my horror upon hearing how the Israeli army named its violent attack on Lebanon on April 8 (one hundred strikes on the country in ten minutes): \u201ceternal darkness\u201d\u2014that is what Israel sought to bring upon the country. Yes, the forces of darkness are at work, particularly in the mindset of the current Israeli government. In contrast, I naturally had in mind the magnificent, sun-drenched summer landscapes, but also all that the human spirit can produce in terms of light, illumination, and powerful radiance. I am thinking in particular of these two quotes from contemporary painters: \u201c Art is the highest form of hope\u201d (Gerhard Richter), and \u201cTo paint is not to seek color, but light\u201d (Mark Rothko).<\/p>\n<p>This led me to reflect on the parallel between the purpose of light and that of Christ, and to attempt to connect these theological and physico-chemical realities with Rothko\u2019s artistic expression.<\/p>\n<p>Both in our daily lives and theologically, light serves essential purposes for us. As we well know, light creates life through photosynthesis, the activation of molecules, heat, and so on\u2026 But furthermore\u2014from both a theological and a physical perspective:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It helps us find our way<\/li>\n<li>It provides depth of field<\/li>\n<li>It highlights<\/li>\n<li>It allows us to distinguish what is \u201cin front\u201d from what comes \u201cafter\u201d<\/li>\n<li>It does not recognize black<\/li>\n<li>It allows us to see where the shadow is<\/li>\n<li>It makes the variety and variations of colors stand out<\/li>\n<li>\u2026.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When Christianity arrived in China in the 7<sup>th<\/sup> century, Chinese Buddhists gave it the name <strong>\u201cthe religion of radiant joy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So I made the connection with Mark Rothko\u2019s paintings.<\/p>\n<p>On Wikipedia, one can find in-depth analyses of his work: here are a few excerpts:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c The Spiritual Experience: Mark Rothko creates experiences. His monumental canvases, filled with blocks of vibrant, ethereal color, invite deep introspection. The artist invites the viewer into a silent dialogue where color emerges as the sole language capable of evoking the most primal and complex human emotions \u2026 By stripping his works of all figurative representation, Rothko freed color from its descriptive function, transforming it into the direct vehicle of emotional experience. Celui qui me suit ne marchera pas dans l\u2019obscurit\u00e9, mais il aura la lumi\u00e8re de la vie<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p><span>Nous arrivons au solstice d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9, la lumi\u00e8re inonde nos jours. Le texte du jour est donc bien en phase avec notre quotidien\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Je suis la lumi\u00e8re du monde\u00a0\u00bb, contraste toutefois de mani\u00e8re perturbante avec l\u2019obscurit\u00e9 que nous constatons dans l\u2019actualit\u00e9 de notre monde. Cette revendication du Christ replac\u00e9e dans le contexte du Proche Orient prend encore plus de force, le Christ s\u2019\u00e9levant au-dessus du pouvoir de l\u2019astre sur la vie de la terre et de la plan\u00e8te. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>J\u2019ai aussi retenu volontiers ce texte du jour car je me suis souvenu de mon effroi lorsque j\u2019ai entendu comment l\u2019arm\u00e9e isra\u00eblienne avait nomm\u00e9 sa violente attaque contre le Liban le 8 avril (cent attaques en dix minutes sur le pays)\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0t\u00e9n\u00e8bres \u00e9ternelles\u00a0\u00bb, c\u2019est ce que Isara\u00ebl souhaitait provoquer dans le pays. Oui, les forces des t\u00e9n\u00e8bres sont \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre, en particulier dans l\u2019esprit du gouvernement isra\u00eblien actuel.\u00a0 Par opposition, j\u2019ai bien s\u00fbr eu \u00e0 l\u2019esprit les magnifiques paysages d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 gorg\u00e9s de soleil, mais aussi tout ce que l\u2019esprit humain peut produire comme lumi\u00e8re, illumination, \u00e9clairage puissant. Je pense en particulier \u00e0 ces deux citations de peintres contemporains\u00a0: <\/span>\u00ab\u00a0L\u2019art est la plus haute forme de l\u2019espoir\u00a0\u00bb (Gerhard Richter), et \u00ab\u00a0peindre, ce n\u2019est pas chercher la couleur, mais la lumi\u00e8re\u00a0\u00bb (Mark Rothko).<\/p>\n<p><span>Cela m\u2019a amen\u00e9 \u00e0 quelques r\u00e9flexions sur le parall\u00e8le entre ce \u00e0 quoi servent la lumi\u00e8re et le Christ, et \u00e0 tenter de relier ces r\u00e9alit\u00e9s th\u00e9ologique ou physico-chimique avec l\u2019expression artistique de Rothko. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Aussi bien sur le plan de notre vie quotidienne que th\u00e9ologiquement, la lumi\u00e8re nous sert \u00e0 des choses essentielles. On le sait bien, la lumi\u00e8re est cr\u00e9atrice de la vie par la photosynth\u00e8se, l\u2019activation des mol\u00e9cules, la chaleur etc\u2026\u00a0 Mais encore: d\u2019un point de vue aussi bien th\u00e9ologique que physique\u00a0: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Elle permet de s\u2019orienter<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Elle donne la profondeur de champ<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Elle met en relief<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Elle permet de distinguer ce qui est \u00abdevant\u00bb et ce qui vient \u00abapr\u00e8s\u00bb<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Elle ne (re)conna\u00eet pas le noir<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Elle permet de voir o\u00f9 est l\u2019ombre <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Elle fait se distinguer la vari\u00e9t\u00e9 et les variations des couleurs <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>\u2026.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>Lorsque le christianisme arrive en Chine au VII<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, les bouddhistes chinois lui donnent le nom de <strong>\u00abla religion de la joie irradiante ( radieuse, rayonnante)\u00bb. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Alors j\u2019ai fait le lien avec la peinture de Mark Rothko. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Sur wikip\u00e9dia, on peut trouver des analyses approfondies sur son \u0153uvre\u00a0: voici quelques extraits\u00a0: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span>\u00ab\u00a0Mark Rothko: l\u2019exp\u00e9rience spirituelle\u00a0: <\/span><\/em><em>Mark Rothko cr\u00e9e des exp\u00e9riences.
