It appears in the closing lines of Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, offering his final recommendation to the community—a concise summary of the entire letter.

Is the call to “do all in love” self-evident for every Christian? A cliché? Or is it something deeper?

And yet, this ideal is impossible to fully achieve. Paul’s relationship with the church in Corinth exemplifies this tension. In his letter, he sometimes addresses the community with sharp and stern words. Just a few chapters earlier (Chapter 13), Paul offers a profound description of love—a passage often recited at weddings, during moments when life feels idyllic. Why such a strong emphasis on love, if not to highlight how frequently our actions fall short of embodying its true essence?

The love that Christ gives, asks for, and commands is neither sentimental nor romantic. It is, above all, a gift of trust and a call to transformation. Love requires sacrifice —both for the giver and for the individual or community that receives it. It is rarely the %22gift%22 we expect. Love disrupts. It calls for change. It challenges us to adopt new perspectives, actions, and reactions.

This profound understanding of love aligns deeply with FAP’s mission: to support the work of loving one another, to strengthen the capacity for action within Reformed churches around the world, and to advocate for transformation in the world through those who bear witness to this love. Such transformation often starts not with our enemies but with those closest to us: with ourselves, in our own personal growth and development; with our communities, as they strengthen their mission; with our neighbours—those who are impoverished and isolated—; and with the forgotten child, the excluded, the sick and the natural world. In the public sphere, love manifests as justice.

This is the commitment FAP renews this year, standing in solidarity with local communities to embody and enact this love.

Rev.
