Thousands of mainly European and North American theologians published a manifesto to defend the memory of the anti-totalitarian positions of the author of the famous letters written in prison and published in English under the title \u2018letters and papers from the prison\u201d. <br \/>It struck me as an illustration of current trends and tendencies among populist movements to exploit religious symbols. The US elections, many of the current deadlocks in the governance of Western countries reinforce the ultraconservative, isolationist, nationalist and neoliberal positions that like to play this game, including in Switzerland. These attempts and blockages have led some Internet users, Christians and non-Christians alike, to leave messages such as \u2018the time for resistance has begun\u2019 on \u2018social\u2019 networks. The polarization of opinions and radicalization are also being felt within and between churches around the world, whether it\u2019s around the fight for a better climate, the war against Ukraine or Israel\u2019s completely disproportionate reaction in Gaza, Lebanon and even now in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0I was thinking of writing a Christmas message that would revolve around this alternative \u2018resistance and\/or resilience\u2019, advocating more an \u2018and\u2019 than an \u2018or\u2019. The aim would have been to do justice both to the silent testimony of resilience shown by the populations of the countries of the South and of the Eastern Mediterranean, the main victims of these disruptions, and to the few voices in the West that dare to criticize and denounce publicly the double standards of a West that is still hegemonic. I thought I\u2019d illustrate this with details from Auguste Rodin\u2019s monumental sculpture \u2018Hell\u2019s gate\u2019, which stands in front of the Kunsthaus in Zurich. This work was elaborated in parallel with the political events that shook Europe between 1880 and 1917, such as the rise of nationalism, blind faith in scientific progress, massive industrialization and its social and environmental consequences, the strengthening of colonialism and the Great War, etc. All this is highly topical today again.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0What comes after hell? How can we get through it? How can we still hope? <br \/>I was at this point in my dark reflections when 7 and 8 December came and the Syrian regime collapsed. I found myself in the same state of mind as I had been on 9 November 1989 when the the Berlin Wall fall down: disbelief, amazement, worry, voiceless, tears, also of joy. At the time, I\u2019d like to metamorphose myself into a fly capable of listening in on the conversations of my friends and acquaintances in Lebanon and Syria. <br \/>What happened to hell? How did it get turned around so easily? We who obviously believed it to be so indestructible, inevitable, irreplaceable, what didn\u2019t we see? What did we not believe? <br \/>A few days later, I came across this poem by Hala Mohammad, a Syrian poet who has been a refugee in Paris since 2012. It was she who, like a queen magus in pursuit of the Christmas star, taught it to me again:<\/p>\n<p><i>Impossible to resist, to go through life, these wars, this injustice, without believing in hope. It\u2019s an inner lantern that guides words towards meaning, and meaning towards truth, and truth towards the future, and the future is in the beating heart. All in one word: love.<\/i><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p>The situation in Syria is certainly not yet clear or stable as I write this. Des<br \/>milliers de th\u00e9ologiens essentiellement europ\u00e9ens et nord-am\u00e9ricains publi\u00e8rent un<br \/>manifeste pour d\u00e9fendre la m\u00e9moire des positions antitotalitaires de l\u2019auteur des<br \/>fameuses lettres \u00e9crites en prison et publi\u00e9es en fran\u00e7ais sous le titre \u00ab r\u00e9sistance et<br \/>soumission \u00bb.<br \/>Ce fait me parut une illustration exemplaire de tendances actuelles d\u2019instrumentalisation<br \/>de symboles religieux par des mouvements populistes. Les \u00e9lections am\u00e9ricaines, de<br \/>nombreux blocages dans la gouvernance de pays occidentaux renforcent des positions<br \/>ultraconservatrices, isolationnistes, nationalistes et n\u00e9olib\u00e9rales qui aiment \u00e0 se pr\u00eater \u00e0<br \/>ce jeu, y compris en Suisse. Ces tentatives et ces situations bloqu\u00e9es amen\u00e8rent<br \/>quelques internautes, chr\u00e9tiens ou non, \u00e0 laisser sur les r\u00e9seaux dits \u00ab sociaux \u00bb des<br \/>messages comme \u00ab le temps de la r\u00e9sistance commence \u00bb. La polarisation des<br \/>opinions et la radicalisation se font sentir aussi dans et entre les \u00e9glises sur le plan<br \/>mondial, que ce soit autour de la lutte pour le climat, la guerre contre l\u2019Ukraine ou la<br \/>r\u00e9action compl\u00e8tement disproportionn\u00e9e d\u2019Isra\u00ebl \u00e0 Gaza, au Liban, et, depuis peu, en<br \/>Syrie.<\/p>\n<p>Je r\u00e9fl\u00e9chissais \u00e0 r\u00e9diger un message de No\u00ebl qui tournerait autour de cette alternative<br \/>\u00ab r\u00e9sistance ou\/et r\u00e9silience \u00bb, pr\u00f4nant plus un \u00ab et \u00bb qu\u2019un \u00ab ou \u00bb. Ceci afin de rendre<br \/>justice aussi bien au courage silencieux, \u00e0 la r\u00e9silience des populations des pays du<br \/>Sud ou de l\u2019est de la M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e, principales victimes de ces d\u00e9r\u00e8glements, et aussi<br \/>aux quelques voix \u00e0 l\u2019Ouest qui osent critiquer et d\u00e9noncer publiquement les doubles<br \/>standards d\u2019un Occident toujours h\u00e9g\u00e9monique. J\u2019imaginais illustrer cela avec des<br \/>d\u00e9tails de la sculpture monumentale d\u2019Auguste Rodin \u00ab la porte de l\u2019Enfer \u00bb que l\u2019on<br \/>peut voir devant le Kunsthaus de Zurich. Cette oeuvre a \u00e9t\u00e9 con\u00e7ue en parall\u00e8le aux<br \/>\u00e9v\u00e9nements politiques qui ont boulevers\u00e9 l\u2019Europe entre 1880 et 1917, comme la<br \/>mont\u00e9e des nationalismes, la confiance aveugle dans les progr\u00e8s scientifiques,<br \/>l\u2019industrialisation massive et ses cons\u00e9quences sociales et environnementales, le renforcement du colonialisme, la Grande Guerre\u2026 Tout ceci est d\u2019actualit\u00e9 \u00e0 nouveau aujourd\u2019hui.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Qu\u2019y a-t-il apr\u00e8s l\u2019enfer ? Comment passer \u00e0 travers ? Comment esp\u00e9rer encore ?<br \/>J\u2019en \u00e9tais l\u00e0 dans mes sombres r\u00e9flexions, lorsque survinrent les 7et 8 d\u00e9cembre, et l\u2019effondrement du r\u00e9gime syrien. Je me suis retrouv\u00e9 projet\u00e9 dans le m\u00eame \u00e9tat d\u2019esprit que celui dans lequel j\u2019ai v\u00e9cu le 9 novembre 1989 et la Chute du Mur de Berlin : incr\u00e9dulit\u00e9, \u00e9bahissement, inqui\u00e9tude, mutisme, larmes, de joie aussi. Sur le moment, j\u2019\u2019aurais voulu me m\u00e9tamorphoser en une mouche capable d\u2019\u00e9couter les conversations de mes amis et connaissances au Liban et en Syrie.<br \/>Qu\u2019est-il arriv\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019enfer ? Comment a-t-il \u00e9t\u00e9 retourn\u00e9 si facilement ? Nous qui manifestement le croyions si ind\u00e9boulonnable, in\u00e9vitable, irrempla\u00e7able, que n\u2019avons-mous pas vu ? Que n\u2019avons-nous pas cru ?<\/p>\n<p>Quelques jours plus tard, je suis tomb\u00e9 sur ce po\u00e8me de Hala Mohammad, une po\u00e9tesse syrienne r\u00e9fugi\u00e9e \u00e0 Paris depuis 2012. C\u2019est elle qui, telle une reine-mage \u00e0 la poursuite de l\u2019\u00e9toile de No\u00ebl, me l\u2019a r\u00e9appris :<\/p>\n<p><i>Impossible de r\u00e9sister, traverser la vie, ces guerres, cette injustice, sans croire \u00e0 l\u2019espoir. C\u2019est une lanterne int\u00e9rieure qui guide les mots vers le sens, et le sens vers la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 et la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 vers l\u2019avenir et l\u2019avenir est dans le coeur qui bat. Tout \u00e7a en un seul mot: l\u2019amour.<\/i><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p>La situation en Syrie n\u2019est certes pas encore claire ni stable au moment d\u2019\u00e9crire ces lignes.
